Is Keto Safe While Breastfeeding?

What is the Keto Diet?
The Ketogenic diet (keto) is a diet high in healthy fats, moderate proteins and low in carbohydrates. By eating a certain way, your body will enter a state of “ketosis”. This actually transforms your body from a sugar burner to a fat burner!
It’s about eating real foods like vegetables, eggs, fish, meat, olive oil, and avoiding processed foods. You will eat lower carbs (skip the bread, cakes, and cookies), adequate-protein, and LOTS of healthy fats (which support a rich milk supply). You will nourish yourself and your baby with real food. The best part…no drugs or crazy supplements that could harm you or your baby.

Is there research on doing the keto diet while breastfeeding?
This study looked at 7 healthy lactating mothers and compared them eating a high fat / lower carb diet (HFLC) to a high carb/ low-fat diet (HCLF).
So what did the study find?
- Daily milk production and the amount of milk stayed the same in both diets
- Neither had a negative effect on lactose or protein concentration
- The milk/fat concentration was actually higher in the HFLC diet.Â
- Also, the daily caloric fat intake was much higher – the milk had more calories and was more nutrient-dense!
The other exciting thing that the study showed was that the breastfeeding mothers could lose more weight while consuming an HFLC diet, than the mothers doing the LCHC diet. Â
The breastfeeding mamas doing the HFLC diet could lose the baby weight without affecting milk production and still supplying their babies with the nutrients and energy needed for proper development.
How will the Keto Diet affect my baby?
The fetus naturally starts using ketones right at their formation and then when the baby is born they enter the natural state of ketosis? Your baby will then stay in this healthy state of ketosis the whole time you are exclusively breastfeeding them! Isn’t that amazing?Â
Breast milk from healthy mothers is made up of 50- 60% fat.
So, if babies are naturally born in ketosis and benefit from using fat and ketones for fuel, then why would it be an issue for a breastfeeding mother to follow a ketogenic diet?
